A false ceiling is as much about lighting as it is about looks. Here is how to plan one.
Why use a false ceiling
- Hides beams, wires and AC ducting
- Lets you add cove and spot lighting
- Defines the living and dining zones
Popular living room ideas
- Peripheral ceiling with cove light: a border drop with warm LED strip gives a soft glow.
- Plain centre with spots: clean and suitable for lower ceilings.
- Wooden or veneer accent: adds warmth above the seating area.
- Separate dining drop: a pendant light zone over the dining table.
Mind the height
If your ceiling is low, keep the drop small and avoid heavy designs, which make the room feel heavy. A thin border or a plain ceiling with recessed lights keeps it airy.
Layer the lighting
Combine ambient (cove), task (reading or table lamps) and accent (feature wall or art) lights. Put them on separate switches so you can control the mood.
Plan before construction
Decide fan, AC and light positions first. Changing them after the ceiling is made is messy and costly.
We design ceilings and lighting together with the layout. See our interior design service or read the 3 BHK interior ideas.
