"How much will my interior cost?" is the first question every home owner asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on a handful of choices that you control. This guide explains what drives the cost so you can plan with confidence.
The five things that decide your interior budget
- Carpet area and number of rooms. A 3 BHK costs more than a 2 BHK, but the cost does not rise in a straight line, because the kitchen and bedrooms carry most of the carpentry.
- Scope. A full turnkey interior (civil changes, carpentry, ceiling, electrical, paint, furniture) costs more than a partial project such as only the kitchen and wardrobes.
- Custom carpentry. Wardrobes, TV units, kitchens and beds built to measure are usually the largest part of the budget.
- Material grade. Boards, laminates, hardware, stone and lighting come in many quality levels. The same layout can cost much more or less depending on choices.
- Finish level. Simple, clean finishes cost less than panelling, textured walls, designer ceilings or imported fixtures.
A simple way to plan your budget
Many designers use a rule of thumb that carpentry and furniture take the largest share, followed by electrical and lighting, ceiling and civil work, and finishing such as paint and wallpaper. Your own split will differ, but it helps to decide your total first and then allocate it by priority: spend most on what you use daily (kitchen, bedroom storage) and less on rooms you rarely use.
How to compare two quotes fairly
- Ask for an itemised quote that lists each item, size and material.
- Check board and hardware brands and grades, not just the total.
- Confirm what is included: design fees, electrical, ceiling, paint, cleaning.
- Ask how changes are priced after you approve the design.
Ways to save without hurting quality
- Phase the project: kitchen and bedroom wardrobes first, other rooms later.
- Use loose furniture you already own.
- Keep the layout and plumbing positions where they are.
- Spend on hardware and boards, which you cannot upgrade later, and save on décor you can change.
